Business of the Month: Red House

Founded in April 2012 by owner Marc DeTour, Red House has spent more than 14 years serving as a welcoming gathering place for the Deep River community and surrounding towns. Opening just four and a half months after its purchase, the restaurant set an early tone for the hands-on, passionate approach that continues to define the business today.

Drawing on experience in real estate, a family-owned landscaping business, and years spent working in restaurants, DeTour originally built Red House around barbecue and comfort food —food he describes as a great equalizer. Today, the menu has evolved to be both approachable and wide-ranging, offering something for everyone, whether they are longtime locals or visitors from nearby communities.

Sacrificing for the good of the business has come as second nature to DeTour. He is supported by his wife, Abby, who works full-time as Director of Guidance at North Branford High School. Abby, a familiar face at Red House, often serves as host and helps run food during busy times. Together, their shared commitment and personal involvement reflect the family-driven spirit that continues to shape Red House and keep guests coming back.

At its core, Red House is about people. DeTour places strong emphasis on comfort, safety, and what he calls “overwhelming hospitality,” creating an atmosphere where guests feel genuinely welcomed from the moment they arrive. Supported by an exceptionally talented and dedicated team that operates as an extended family, the entire Red House staff upholds a standard of pride, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. This culture has cultivated a loyal following built on great food, attentive service, and strong sense of community.
